HETAUDA: Nepal champion Badri Lal Nepali claimed the Hetauda Invitational FIDE Rating Chess Tournament with 7.5 points here today.
Nepali drew FIDE Master (FM) Bilam Lal Shrestha in the 10th round to win the trophy on better progressive points after he was tied with Rijendra Rajbhandari of Kathmandu Chess Club, who defeated Uttam Raj Thapa of Kantipur Chess Club in the final round.
Bikash Kuluju of Bhaktapur overcame Niraj Niraula of Dhrubatara Sporting Club of Jhapa to finish third. Nepali pocketed Rs 15,000, while Rajbhandari and Kuluju received Rs 10,000 and Rs 6,000 respectively.
Uttam Raj Thapa of Tanahu and former Nepal champion Keshav Shrestha ended up fourth and fifth respectively. Other rounding up in top 10 were FM Shrestha, Ganesh Man Duwal of Bhaktapur, former Nepal champion Nabin Tandukar, Niraj and Dharam Bahadur Lama.
Sundar Karki of Hetauda claimed the unrated category title on better progressive points than Ramesh Prasad Chaudhary of Bara after both the players finished with six points. Karki received Rs 2,000 and Chaudhary got Rs 1,500.
Other winners included Prem Ale Magar of Hetauda Academy (Under-15), Rabindra Shakya of Lalitpur (Above-50 Veteran), Mani Raj Dangi (Below 1800 rating), Dhirav Rajthala (best local player).
In all, 61 players — 39 rated and 22 unrated — participated in the tournament jointly organised by Hetauda Chess Club and Makwanpur District Chess Association. Nepal Chess Association President Rajesh Hari Joshi among others handed over the prizes to the winners.
